Welcome New Orthopedists & Sports Medicine Doctors

IRVINE, Calif. [Oct. 16, 2020] Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI), which performs the most knee replacement and hip joint replacement surgeries in California, has announced that it has added new orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine doctors to its 300-member medical staff.

Meet Hoag Orthopedic Institute's Newest Orthopedic Surgeons and Sports Medicine Doctors

The newest medical staff members include Brian Jin Choi, D.O., CAQSM, as a sports medicine physician. Dr. Choi is a team physician for the USA Women’s Water Polo team. As part of his fellowship, Dr. Choi covered games and practices for San Diego State University football and basketball and for San Diego Legion, a Major League Rugby team.

Dr. Choi received his bachelor’s degree from University of California, San Diego, with a major in human biology and a minor in music. He attended medical school at A.T. Still University, School of Osteopathic Medicine in Ariz., and completed his family medicine residency at Northridge Family Medicine Program, an affiliate of UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, where he served as a chief resident during his last year of residency. He then completed his sports medicine fellowship at University of California, San Diego.

Also joining the medical staff is Michael Joseph Nieto, M.D., as a primary care sports medicine physician. Prior to joining HOI, Dr. Nieto has served as team physician for various sports teams including Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan University and Golden Gloves Boxing.

Dr. Nieto received his bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary’s College of California, and then received his post-baccalaureate from California State University, Fullerton, before obtaining his Doctor of Medicine from University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine. He then went on to complete his residency at University of Minnesota, and completed his sports medicine fellowship with the John Peter Smith Health Network as chief resident.

Kevin C. Parvaresh, M.D., is joining HOI’s medical staff as a sports medicine surgeon. Dr. Parvaresh is subspecialty trained in sports medicine with an emphasis on hip arthroscopy, and his clinical expertise includes shoulder and hip injuries, arthritis, complex knee pathology, general trauma, and fracture care. He is the team doctor for Orange Lutheran High School, treating a variety of sports injuries and coordinating sports rehabilitation.

Dr. Parvaresh received both his Doctor of Medicine and bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University. He then completed his research fellowship at Rady’s Children Hospital in San Diego, his orthopedic surgery residency from University of California, San Diego, and his sports medicine fellowship at Rush University.

HOI’s newest medical staff also includes Matthew P. Siljander, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement and adult reconstructive surgery, who has been active in research advancing the field of orthopedics. Dr. Siljander has authored numerous scientific publications, multiple book chapters and frequently presented his work at regional and national meetings. While in medical school, he helped design and patent a medical device at Stanford University.

Dr. Siljander studied mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan and worked in the field as an engineer before he earned his medical degree at Chicago Medical School. He then completed his residency training at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in Royal Oak, Mich. After residency, Dr. Siljander continued his training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. with a fellowship in hip and knee replacement surgery.

Hoag Orthopedic Institute is comprised of a specialty hospital in Irvine, Calif., and four ambulatory surgery centers in Newport Beach, Mission Viejo, Orange, and Marina Del Rey. HOI has more than 300 physicians on staff, including more than 80 orthopedic specialists.
