Hoag Orthopedic Institute is once again nationally ranked in the Top 1% of orthopedic hospitals on the U.S. News & World Report's "2023-2024 Best Hospitals" list at #18. Additionally, Hoag Orthopedic Institute has been rated High Performing for Hip Replacement, Knee Replacement and Hip Fracture. HOI also received this recognition in 2022-2023; 2021-2022; 2020-2021; 2019-2020; 2018-2019; 2017-2018; 2013-2014; 2012-2013.


Hoag Orthopedic Institute was recognized for a 5 Star Patient Experience by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on their Hospital Compare Website in 2020. HOI is the only hospital in Southern California to receive a five-star rating for patient experience.


Hoag Orthopedic Institute has been recognized with the 2020 Patient Safety Honor Roll Award from California Health and Human Services (CHHS), in partnership with Hospital Quality Institute (HQI) and Cal Hospital Compare (CHC).


Hoag Orthopedic Institute is once again nationally ranked in the Top 2% in the 50 best orthopedic hospitals of the U.S. News & World Report's "2020-2021 Best Hospitals" list. Additionally, Hoag Orthopedic Institute has been rated High Performing for Hip Replacement and Knee Replacement. For the eighth consecutive year, HOI performed the highest volume of joint replacement procedures in the State of California, based on data released December 2018 by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD).


HOI has the lowest readmission rate in the state of California and the 4th lowest in the Nation per Health Services Advisory Group.


Press Ganey Guardian has recognized Hoag Orthopedic Institute with 3 awards in 2020, including, the Guardian of Excellence® for Patient Experience for the seventh consecutive year, the Pinnacle of Excellence® for Patient Experience in HCAHPS for maintaining consistently high levels of excellence over multiple years, and the Pinnacle of Excellence® for Patient Experience in “Inpatient” for maintaining consistently high levels of excellence over multiple years.

HOI was one of three hospitals selected by the California Joint Replacement Registry to pilot a statewide registry database for patients undergoing joint replacement surgery tracking long-term patient outcomes.


HOI collaborated with McKesson and Aetna to create the first automated implementation of Integrated Healthcare Associations (IHA’s) bundled payment model, designed to decrease healthcare costs by improving practices and standardizing care. This model is the first of its kind in California and one of the first in the nation. The bundling system, which began in 2012 with knee replacements and now includes hip replacement surgeries, has created a new level of accountability and transparency in medical care
