Hoag Orthopedic Institute Begins Enrolling Patients in Nationwide Study Detailing Joint Replacement Experience Via Zimmer Biomet mymobility™ App with Apple Watch®

IRVINE, Calif. (December 12, 2018) Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI), one of the largest providers of orthopedic care in the nation, is the only Southern California hospital participating in the newly launched, multi-site Zimmer Biomet mymobility™ Clinical Study, which seeks to assess the impact on patient outcomes and overall costs for as many as 10,000 joint replacement patients across the nation. HOI is one of 18 sites throughout the U.S. participating in the trial which officially launched on October 15, 2018.

Millions of Americans receive a hip or knee replacement each year, making the procedures two of the most commonly performed in the country. Zimmer Biomet’s mymobility app, used in conjunction with an Apple Watch® wrist wearable device and iPhone® mobile digital device, will act as a virtual and continuous care team on each patient’s wrist.

The app has several features that use both Apple Watch and the iPhone, including the ability for surgeons to send education and therapy reminders directly to the patient’s Apple Watch. The app also allows surgeons to monitor patient activity levels throughout the days and weeks while they are preparing for and recovering from surgery.

“Our research team is looking forward to analyzing the efficacy of this novel approach to tracking patients before and after joint replacement surgery,” said Dr. Steven Barnett, an orthopedic surgeon and principal investigator for the study at Hoag Orthopedic Institute. “The ability to accurately track the activity levels of our patients will give us quantitative, unbiased measurements to further enhance and improve upon our patients’ experiences throughout the continuum of care.”

In what will be one of the largest evidence-gathering clinical studies in orthopedic history, HOI will be able to combine patient-reported feedback with the continuous health and activity data gathered by the Apple Watch to guide patients through pre- and post-op care.

“We’re excited at the prospect of using the data and insights gleaned from this innovative study to continue to drive value and improve care for our patients,” said Jennifer Mitzner, CEO of Hoag Orthopedic Institute. “This is yet another example of how Hoag Orthopedic Institute is forging the future of care delivery with its continued commitment to advancements in digital solutions with the aim of improving the entire continuum of care for those we serve.”
