Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI), one of the largest providers of spine and orthopedic care in the nation, has announced the appointment of veteran health care executive Kim Mikes, MBA, BSN, RN, CNOR, to the position of Chief Executive Officer for the institution.

Mikes, who had been serving as acting CEO following the departure of former CEO Jennifer Mitzner in May 2021, was selected after a months-long, nationwide search and review of more than 100 applications for the position.

“Kim has an extraordinary depth of clinical and operational knowledge having served not only at HOI since 2016, but in multiple leadership roles in health care, including general and specialty hospitals and even at one of the largest private practice groups in the U.S.,” said Dr. James Caillouette, Chairman of the Board of Managers at Hoag Orthopedic Institute. “Her deep knowledge in running all aspects of a hospital, coupled with her exceptional business acumen, give her a unique knowledge base for our enterprise, and we are fortunate to have her at the helm of our organization.”

Prior to serving as acting CEO, Mikes had been Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Officer at Hoag Orthopedic Institute since starting in 2016. Before joining HOI, she served in a variety of roles at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, including Executive Nursing and Operations Director at the Women’s Health Institute and Nursing Director for the Short Stay Surgery Unit. Prior to her arrival in Southern California, Mikes had held a number of top leadership positions at major medical centers throughout the U.S.

“The unique experience Kim brings to the position will afford HOI the opportunity to further expand and improve, which ultimately means high quality care for even more people in need of top-notch orthopedic care,” said Dr. Steven Barnett, Chief Medical Officer at HOI. “And as the highest volume orthopedic hospital in the state for more than seven years running, we’re excited to see the new course she helps us chart.”

Mikes is a registered nurse, with a special certification in perioperative care (CNOR), and hold a certification in Leadership for Healthcare Transformation from University of California, Irvine, where she also earned her Master of Business Administration. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at University of Wyoming, Laramie and is currently a member of numerous professional organizations including the Association of Perioperative Nurses (AORN) and Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society.
