HOI Ranked 27th in Orthopedics – Up from Rank 35 Previous Year

Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI), one of the largest providers of orthopedic care in the nation, has been nationally ranked in the top 30 best orthopedic hospitals in U.S. News & World Report’s “2021-2022 Best Hospitals” list. HOI’s ranking rose to number 27 in the nation from number 35 the previous year. In addition to this distinction, U.S. News has also recognized HOI as “High Performing” in Back Surgery (Spinal Fusion), Hip Fracture, Hip Replacement, and Knee Replacement for 2021-2022.

“HOI is honored to once again be included in U.S. News & World Report’s best hospitals list,” said HOI Acting CEO Kim Mikes. “The rise of our national ranking as a leader in the delivery of high-quality musculoskeletal health care is an affirmation of our team’s dedication to helping each of our patients reach their goals, fulfilling our promise of ‘We Get You Back to You.’”

The annual “Best Hospitals” rankings and ratings, now in their 32nd year, are designed to assist patients and doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions, or elective procedures. With more than one million Americans receiving joint replacements each year, and millions more receiving other orthopedic surgeries, those in pain can use these rankings in identifying the highest performing hospitals and physicians.

The methodologies used in most areas of care for the 2021-22 U.S. News rankings and ratings are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient experience, patient safety, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.

“We applaud U.S. News World & Report’s efforts to improve transparency in health care and are confident that these rankings will help those who need musculoskeletal medical services make informed decisions about their care,” said Steven Barnett, M.D., chief medical officer of HOI. “This ranking underscores our founding mission of providing better access to exceptional orthopedic care in the communities we serve.”

HOI, the highest volume provider of joint replacements in California, has received consistent recognition from various publications and health care organizations for its patient-focused services since opening in 2010, including topping the U.S. News Best Hospitals List in 2020-2021; 2019-2020; 2018-2019; 2017-2018; 2013-2014 and 2012-2013.
