Opioids Overprescribed After Arthroscopic Meniscectomy

Hoag Orthopedic Institute's non-profit research arm Hoag Orthopedics recently published a paper that analyzed more than 100 cases to determine the volume of unused opioids following straightforward orthopedic surgery - in this instance arthroscopic meniscectomy.
The study found:
- Surgeons prescribed 3,765 pills to the 102 patients - that's roughly 37 per patient
- Only 573.5 were consumed
- A total of 3,191.5 pills were unused and potentially available to the public
