Orthopedic Visionary to Lead Newly-Launched Education and Research Program at HOI

IRVINE, Calif. (May 13, 2013) – Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI) announced this week that Michael J. Patzakis, M.D., professor emeritus and former Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine at USC, has been appointed as the Medical Director of the Orthopedic Education & Research Institute at Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, California. Dr. Patzakis

Dr. Patzakis will be overseeing the development and growth of the recently launched Orthopedic Education & Research Institute which will operate out of Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI). In addition to supervising the Total Joints Research and Fellowship Program which is currently operational, Dr. Patzakis will be managing the inauguration of the clinical and research programs in Sports Medicine and Spine, and a comprehensive education and research program for HOI.

“Hoag Orthopedic Institute is a fruitful environment for research and education, with a reputation for providing high-quality patient care and industry-leading outcomes,” said Dr. Patzakis, who has been the principal investigator on more than 60 research studies and has authored more than 170 abstracts, book chapters and scientific papers. “Orthopedic research and education has been a major component of my career for many years now, and I’m honored to be joining the team at HOI as we begin this important undertaking,” he added.

In addition to implementing numerous orthopedic fellowships while serving at USC, Dr. Patzakis has received hundreds of accolades in both the medical community and the private sector throughout his 43 year career in academic orthopedic surgery.
