About Our Travel Program

High Quality Orthopedic Care at Affordable Rates

The Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI) Travel Program provides easy access to top-quality care in Orange County, California. Individuals requiring joint replacement surgery and other orthopedic procedures, such as spine surgery, come here from across the country for orthopedic excellence. Our Travel Program is designed for those looking for high quality orthopedic care at affordable rates. If you are interested in learning more about this program, give us a call today.

HOI holds agreements with all major insurance plans, such as Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, United Health Care, Health Net and others. Through a special travel rate, employers and their insurance providers may receive a global rate for joint replacement procedures – only one bill that will include hospital, physician providers’ and post-surgery Home Health therapists’ services for the episode of care. Knowing the costs prior to surgery can be a big relief for many.

Making Travel Arrangements

To get started, you will need to arrange for a phone or in-person consult with an orthopedic surgeon on the Hoag Orthopedic Institute medical staff. For help in selecting an HOI physician, please contact Lay Homsombath (see contact information at the bottom of this page.) Your HOI surgeon will make certain that you meet reasonable medical criteria to consider your safety for travel.

The surgeon’s office staff and an HOI pre-admission coordinator will assist you every step of the way with preparations for your procedure. We will ask that a travel companion accompany you for your care. Travel patients usually stay in a local hotel. Although the average length of stay in the hospital is just one to three days, the average visit to Orange County is eight days.

HOI has worked with nearby hotels to secure reduced rates for travel patients and companions. With some employers and insurance plans, reimbursement for traveling costs (transportation and lodging) may also be available. Once you return home, you will need to be followed by your primary care physician or specialist and a physical therapist near your home.
