Back Pain (Lumbar Pain)

Nearly everyone will experience low back pain, or lumbar pain, at some point in their lives. It is most often caused by sprains, strains, and disc degeneration and can often be effectively treated through conservative (non-surgical) approaches, including medication, rest and physical therapy. At the Center for Spine at Hoag Orthopedic Institute, our board-certified specialists take a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to treating lumbar pain and common spine conditions, so you can get back to you.

Back Pain at a Glance

Back pain, or lumbar pain when it affects the lower back, is a common symptom resulting from muscle strain, arthritis, disc problems or other spinal conditions. Most cases improve with conservative, nonsurgical treatment.

  • Symptoms include: Dull or sharp pain, stiffness, muscle spasms or difficulty standing, bending or walking.
  • Causes include: Muscle strain, arthritis, herniated discs or spinal stenosis.
  • Most back pain improves without surgery, but pain with numbness, weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control requires prompt medical attention.
  • When to see an orthopedic specialist: If symptoms are severe, persistent, worsening or limiting daily activities.

Hoag Orthopedic Institute provides advanced diagnosis and treatment options for patients with back pain.

Diagnosing Back Pain

Our specialists place an emphasis on accurate diagnoses, which is why we work personally with patients to understand their symptoms and medical history. We then utilize innovative technology and tools to help identify any serious causes of pain. These include tests and imaging tools such as bone scans, CT scans, MRI, X-ray, EMG, discography, SSEP, and more. Once your underlying condition is diagnosed, we can evaluate available treatment options and customize care according to your needs.
