About Dr. Joanne Y. Zhang

Dr. Joanne Y. Zhang is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in treatment of Hand, Wrist and Elbow conditions and injuries. She is from San Diego and obtained her undergraduate degree at Yale University before attending medical school at Duke University. She also holds an MBA from the University of California at Los Angeles, where she focused on healthcare economics and published papers on practice trends and costs with UCLA orthopedic surgeons.

After medical school, Dr. Zhang completed five years of orthopedic surgery residency training at Boston Medical Center with the renowned trauma surgeon Dr. Paul Tornetta III. She completed an additional year of fellowship training at the University of Chicago, specializing in surgery of the hand and upper extremity.

In fellowship, she designed and implemented a referral system to ensure patients with upper extremity fractures were receiving long-term bone health care to prevent future fractures. She has published several articles in peer-reviewed orthopedic surgery journals including the Journal of Orthopedic Trauma and the Journal of Hand Surgery, a textbook chapter on the treatment of wrist fractures, and has won research awards at national medical conferences. She is an active member in both the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH).

Dr. Zhang currently lives in Irvine with her family. She enjoys the beach, hiking, landscape photography, and spending time with her German Shorthaired Pointer. She is a first-generation American and speaks Mandarin Chinese.
