Shaping the Future of Orthopedic Excellence

Hoag Orthopedics Fellowship Program Provides 'Privademic' Training to Tomorrow's Elite Physicians

Hoag Orthopedics is a not-for-profit organization established by Hoag Orthopedic Institute's (HOI) renowned physicians to provide higher education, research and community outreach in the field of musculoskeletal medicine. As part of that commitment, Hoag Orthopedics offers post-residency fellowship programs in adult reconstruction/joint replacement of the hip & knee, spine surgery, and an ACGME accredited sports medicine program.

Hoag Orthopedics fellowship programs contain a robust educational conference schedule that includes labs, pre/post op conferences, grand rounds, journal clubs and morbidity and mortality conferences in a nonacademic setting. The 'privademic' program offers academic-level training in a private setting, providing the fellows with a launchpad into leadership, high level surgical expertise, innovation, and world-class patient care.

Fellowship Programs Offered:

• Adult Reconstruction Hip & Knee Fellowship

• Surgical Spine Fellowship

• Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship (ACGME accredited)

Each fellowship program is led by renowned surgeons, supported by cutting-edge facilities, and driven by a culture of excellence.

"The Hoag Orthopedics Fellowship programs offer a rare blend of high-volume clinical experience, the management of complex orthopedic problems as a tertiary care referral center, cutting-edge research opportunities, and mentorship from nationally recognized surgeons;' shares Robert Gorab, MD, one of the founding physicians of HOI and Program Chairman of the Hoag Orthopedics Joint Arthroplasty Fellowship program. "Our adult reconstruction/joint replacement fellowship is one of the most highly sought after fellowship training programs in the nation and prepares our fellows not only to be excellent clinicians, but future leaders in orthopedics. HOI was founded in 2010 with a focus on improving musculoskeletal care, including complex tertiary care joint replacement expertise, through strong support of clinical research and physician education."

Fellowship Day

In June, Hoag Orthopedics held its 10th annual Fellowship Research Day. The annual event celebrated a decade of innovation, collaboration and clinical excellence. It honored the outstanding accomplishments of this year's graduating fellows from Hoag Orthopedics Fellowship Program as well as the dedicated faculty from Hoag Orthopedic Institute, research coordinators, and clinical staff who make this work possible. The day also featured distinguished visiting professor Dr. Andrew C. Hecht, a nationally recognized spine specialist, who delivered an informative presentation titled, "Cervical Spine Injury in Athletes: State of the Art."

One graduating fellow, Casey Slattery, MD, looks forward to continuing on as a fellowship-trained spine surgeon at Hoag Orthopedic Institute. "After completing my fellowship at Hoag Orthopedic Institute alongside such an exceptional team of spine surgery experts, I knew this was the ideal place to continue my career." He will begin seeing patients in September 2025.
