HOI Reaches 1,500 Robotic Surgery Milestone

Cases Up 159% in the Last Year Alone

Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI), the West Coast’s volume leader in joint replacement surgery, has reached a milestone by performing more than 1,500 robotic-assisted surgeries at its hospital and affiliated surgery centers. The achievement underscores the rapid growth of robotic-assisted orthopedic cases, with case volume increasing 159% over the last year alone at HOI.

“Robotic-assisted surgery has transformed orthopedic care by delivering a consistent level of surgical precision and personalized planning that simply wasn’t possible before,” said Jay Patel, M.D., who performs robotic knee replacement surgery at Hoag Orthopedic Institute. “For our patients, the rapid growth in robotic cases translates into deep surgical expertise and personalized care, helping them return to everyday life faster with excellent outcomes.”

Surgeons at Hoag Orthopedic Institute have been performing robotic-assisted orthopedic surgery since 2021. Today, there are 10 orthopedic surgical robots in use at HOI and its affiliated surgery center network. The program combines the expertise of the hospital’s renowned, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons with advanced robotic systems. These systems do not replace the surgeon but rather act as highly sophisticated tools to enhance the surgeon’s capabilities.

HOI’s robotic systems offer 3D mapping of the joint, allowing surgeons to make incredibly accurate cuts and placements. This precision helps ensure better joint alignment, which can enhance mobility and reduce wear on implants over time. Other benefits of robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery include personalized surgical plans, lower risk of surgical errors, faster recovery times and smaller incisions, which result in less tissue damage, reduced blood loss and fewer complications.

“Reaching the 1,500 robotic joint replacement surgery milestone shows how committed Hoag Orthopedic Institute is to advancing patient care for better outcomes,” said Michael Hunter, M.D., orthopedic joint replacement surgeon at Hoag Orthopedic Institute. “Our patients deserve and expect the latest technology with precise, predictable outcomes and I am happy to be a part of this monumental achievement.”
