Award Recognizes Excellence in Bone Health and Fracture Prevention
Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI), one of the largest providers of orthopedic care in the nation, is proud to announce that it has received an Own the Bone Star Performer designation this year, an achievement reserved only for institutions that perform the highest level of fragility fracture and bone health care.
This recognition is reserved for institutions that achieve a 75% compliance rate with at least five of the 10 Own the Bone prevention measures. These measures include: educating patients on the importance of calcium and vitamin D, physical activity, fall prevention, limiting alcohol intake and smoking cessation; recommending and initiating bone mineral density testing; discussing pharmacotherapy and treatment; and providing written communication to the patient and their physician regarding specific risk factors and treatment recommendations.
These measures are designed to improve post-fracture care and reduce the risk of future fractures by promoting stronger bone health through evidence-based interventions.
“Earning Star Performer recognition reflects HOI’s ongoing dedication to advancing musculoskeletal health, bone health and preventing fragility fractures,” said Kim Mikes, MBA, RN, CEO of Hoag Orthopedic Institute. “Our participation in the Own the Bone program allows us to identify patients at risk, intervene early and provide the resources they need for long-term bone health.”
Through HOI’s participation in Own the Bone since 2013 and recognition as an Own the Bone Star Performer since 2016, the organization has demonstrated a commitment to helping patients understand their risk for future fractures and the steps they can take to prevent them.
