11 Spine Surgeons and Orthopedic Specialists Join HOI Medical Staff

Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI), one of the largest providers of orthopedic care in the nation, has announced that it has added 11 new physicians to its medical staff, including musculoskeletal specialists in spine, neurosurgery, sports medicine, shoulder, foot and ankle, hand, pain medicine and joint replacement.

“We enthusiastically welcome 11 excellent multidisciplinary physicians to our medical staff,” said Kim Mikes, MBA, RN, CEO of Hoag Orthopedic Institute. “Our model as a physician-owned organization that puts patient outcomes and care first attracts like-minded physicians. The new doctors will find an environment of innovation, high-quality care, access to the latest technologies and equipment and a facility that boasts some of the best outcomes in the nation.”

The specialists include:

Spine

  • Alvin Y. Chan, M.D., a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon with expertise in brain and spine surgery. Dr. Chan has contributed significantly to the field of neurosurgery, publishing more than 70 journal articles and book chapters. He pursued fellowship training in skullbase and cerebrovascular surgery.
  • Casey A. Slattery, M.D., a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon and back pain specialist who has been active in research advancing the field of orthopedics. Dr. Slattery is a recent graduate of Hoag Orthopedics’ fellowship program in spine surgery.
  • Kushagra Verma, M.D., a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon who is a leader in the treatment of various forms of spinal anomalies including scoliosis, kyphosis, flatback syndrome and spondylolisthesis.

Foot and Ankle

  • Victor Y. Hong, M.D., a fellowship-trained orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon dedicated to helping patients restore mobility and relieve pain. He completed advanced fellowship training in minimally invasive techniques, arthroscopy and complex reconstructive procedures of the foot and ankle.

Shoulder and Upper Extremities

  • John M. Ibrahim, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon with specialized expertise in conditions affecting the upper extremity—from the shoulder to the fingertips. His fellowship training focused on bone, joint, tendon, and nerve conditions of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. He trained in Lucerne, Switzerland, in advanced techniques with a special focus on minimally invasive surgery.

Orthopedic Surgery - Sports Medicine

  • Michael J. Fitzpatrick, M.D., a recognized, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who is double-board certified in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery. He has focused his practice on investigating, diagnosing and treating sports injuries with special research interests in minimally invasive shoulder replacements and arthroscopic surgery.
  • Matthew Zapf, M.D., a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. He treats complex sports-related, degenerative and acute injuries to the shoulder, hip and knee.

Primary Care – Sports Medicine

  • Bassil Aish, M.D., a double board-certified, fellowship-trained family and sports medicine physician offering more than 20 years of clinical experience. He provides a comprehensive range of medical services, from urgent care to sports medicine, including physical therapy and concussion diagnosis and treatment.
  • Connie J. Oh, M.D., a board-certified, fellowship-trained primary care sports medicine physician who treats athletes and active individuals of all ages with non-surgical orthopedic conditions and sports injuries. She specializes in metabolic bone health and osteoporosis, as well as performing musculoskeletal ultrasound and minimally invasive procedures and orthobiologic treatments including hyaluronic acid and platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

Pain Medicine

  • Nicholas Bacher, M.D., a board-certified, fellowship-trained anesthesiologist and interventional pain medicine specialist. He provides relief for back, neck and joint pain through advanced interventional techniques.

Joint Replacement

  • David H. So, M.D., a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement for the treatment of knee and hip arthritis. Dr. So has advanced training in joint replacement techniques, including minimally invasive, anterior-approach hip replacement, computer-assisted hip and knee arthroplasty, partial knee replacement as well as the use of medial pivot and custom knee implants. He also has extensive experience treating patients with failed or infected hip and knee replacements.

HOI now has more than 300 physicians on staff, including more than 80 orthopedic specialists.
