About Dr. Russell S. Petrie
Dr. Russell Petrie is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and fellowship-trained sports medicine physician specializing in the treatment of knee, shoulder, and sports-related injuries. He treats patients ranging from professional athletes to active individuals seeking to return to the activities they love.
Dr. Petrie earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, where he double majored in Biology (with High Honors) and Economics. He went on to earn his medical degree from Mayo Medical School and completed his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He completed advanced fellowship training in orthopedic sports medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, where he worked with collegiate athletes and professional sports organizations, including the Pittsburgh Steelers. His training also includes experience at Nemours Children’s Hospital and the Minneapolis Sports Medicine Center.
He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is subspecialty certified in Sports Medicine.
Dr. Petrie serves as Chairman and President of the Board of Newport Orthopedic Institute and is a member of the Hoag Orthopedic Institute Board. He is also actively involved in education as a core faculty member of the Hoag Orthopedic Institute Sports Medicine Fellowship Program and has served as an arthroscopy instructor at the San Diego Shoulder Institute for more than 15 years.
His professional experience includes serving as a former team physician for the Los Angeles Chargers and as former Head Team Physician for Vanguard University Athletics. He currently serves as team physician for Corona del Mar High School.
Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Petrie is the founder and a board member of Okeanos®, an international company focused on reducing plastic waste through sustainable packaging innovation.
