Types of Shoulder Surgery
The Hoag Orthopedic Institute team gives patients with shoulder pain and
conditions the opportunity to once again live and work in a fuller capacity.
This is achieved through innovative surgical approaches, minimally invasive
surgery, and the expertise of orthopedic surgeons who are among the top
in their fields.
Depending on your condition, medical history, and other unique factors,
there may be options when it comes to the type of shoulder surgery most
appropriate for you. These may include:
-
Shoulder Arthroscopy – Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive technique that can be used
as both a diagnostic tool and surgical approach. It involves the use of
a small camera (arthroscope) inserted into small incisions around the
shoulder. Images from the arthroscope allows surgeons to guide tiny surgical
instruments as they repair various parts of the joint. Because incisions
and surgical tools used in arthroscopy are much smaller than those needed
to perform traditional open shouldersurgery, patients commonly experience
faster recoveries and less pain. Shoulder arthroscopy can be used to treat
a range of conditions that do not respond to non-surgical care, and are
commonly used in procedures for rotator cuff injuries, bursitis, ligament
repair, recurrent shoulder dislocation, bone spur removal, labrum surgery,
removal of inflamed tissue or loose cartilage, and more.
-
Shoulder Replacement – In some cases, severe shoulder conditions or injuries may require
replacement of the shoulder. This can involve one of several procedures,
including resurfacing hemiarthroplasty, in which the cap of the ball joint
is replaced with a prosthesis and remaining bone preserved, or stemmed
hemiarthroplasty, in which only the ball of the shoulder joint is replaced
with a metal ball and stem. It may also involve total should replacement
involving the entire ball and socket shoulder joint being replaced, or
reverse total shoulder replacement, where the shoulder joint is replaced,
but the positions of the ball and socket are switched.
