Hospitalists

Hospitalists have been providing exceptional inpatient care at Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI) since 2010. HOI’s hospitalist program has continued to grow in response to needs of the hospital and the communities it serves. The physicians comprising the hospitalist team at HOI are all board-certified in Internal Medicine and their services are available in the hospital 24 hours a day.

What is a hospitalist?

A hospitalist is a physician who specializes in the care of hospitalized patients. The physician dedicates all of their time caring for patients inside the hospital and follows a patient through their stay at the hospital to ensure they receive the best possible care. HOI hospitalists are well trained in internal medicine and well-versed in the unique needs of the hospitalized patient.

What is the role of a hospitalist during my stay?

Your HOI hospitalist assumes the role of your primary care physician (PCP) while you are in the hospital. The hospitalist will gather information provided by your PCP regarding your condition and medical history and may provide timely updates of your progress to your PCP. The hospitalist works with nurses and other medical staff to provide you individualized care tailored to your needs.

What are the benefits of having a hospitalist?

Hospitalists are devoted to the care of the patient 24 hours a day. Therefore, someone from the hospitalist team is always available to oversee a patient’s care or respond to changes in a patient’s status. Hospitalists are dedicated to working in the hospital setting and are familiar with hospital procedures and staff. This benefits you by providing you with timely, consistent, and quality care.

What if my family has questions?

HOI hospitalists keep you and your family updated as much as possible. Hospitalists are available to answer questions in person and their presence in the hospital helps them to be accessible.

What will happen after I’m discharged?

Your care will resume with your PCP, who will continue to coordinate your care with your surgeon.

Patient Satisfaction

HOI hospitalists have received high marks in patient satisfaction. You are likely to receive a patient satisfaction survey after discharge from the hospital. Please let us now during your stay if there is anything we can do to further accommodate you and your family.
